The Chong Hua Hospital Center for Sleep Disordes is the first and only sleep laboratory outside Manila. It is the first one in the Philippines to use the most advanced ResMed EMBLA digital sleep recorder. It is the same system used by the Harvard and Stanford Centers for Sleep Disorders.

During the sleep study, 16 recordings (including Electroenchephalogram, EKG, Electromyogram, electrooculogram, sleep position, pulse oximetry, airflow measurements by oronasal thermistor and nasal pressure transducer, thoracic and abdominal effort belts, real time video recording, snoring sensors and limb movement monitor) will be analyzed to make a definitive diagnosis and initiate treatment. Diagnosis of sleep apnea is not simple because there can be many different reasons for disturbed sleep.

Measurement of the electrical activity generated in nerves, the neuromuscular junction and muscles has been carried out as routine examination in many medical centers all over the world.  This is being done in the NEUROPHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY. Evoked potential studies such as the auditory brainstem response are essential in the evaluation of patients with hearing loss, while somatosensory evoked potentials and visual evoked potentials test for general sensory and visual impairment, respectively.  Certain neurophysiologic protocols also provide useful information in assessing involvement of the nervous system secondary to systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure.

State of the art electrodiagnostic equipment has the capability to test  evoked potentials and electromyographic (EMG) examinations 30 times.  The results provide useful information to clinicians in the diagnosis and prognostication of neurologic diseases.  At present the following protocols are available at the Neurophysiology Laboratory:

After the surgery, patients are admitted directly to the PACU (Post Anaesthesia Care Unit), a 10 – bed unit located at the Operating Room Complex of the hospital’s main building. With a team of quality surgeons and medical practitioners, aided with critical - care trained nursing staff, patients are well taken cared of in this significant stage of their lives.

The acquisition of six units of (Philips M3) CARDIAC MONITOR, (Philips M4735 A) HEARTSTART XL Defibrillator/Monitor, Built – in OXYGEN AND SUCTION Apparatus and a Central Monitor, all of which are of proper maintenance, assure each patient’s recovery to be well anticipated.

Every patient is isolated from the outside environment to ensure maximum recovery after a surgical procedure. But the immediate family is not restricted to follow up their patient.

Scope of Patient Services:

Patients who came from a surgery and those who receive anesthesia, including general, spinal, epidural anesthesia, regional blocks and sedation with monitored anesthesia care (MAC), and nerve blocking recover in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.

The Chong Hua Hospital Pulmonary Unit - aims to become the best equipped center in the  Visayas and Mindanao area.  It houses the most modern equipment that is needed in almost all aspects of respiratory medicine.  This is complemented by a very professional and well trained respiratory staff that is available 24 hours of the day.  It provides both diagnostic and therapeutic services for all in – and out-patients.  The diagnostic facilities that can be availed of are the complete Pulmonary Function Testing (VMax 22), ABG, IPG and Bronchoscopy.

A standard practice in the evaluation and care of patients with various cardiorespiratory disorder is the measurement of the function of the lungs. This is offered by the unit through its latest and most modern acquisition, the Vmax 22. The Vmax 22 provides a comprehensive information on the function of the lungs namely: Spirometry , Lung volume and diffusion studies. The primary indications for such tests are:

It is a specialized OPD unit, designed for Adult and Pediatric patients who are diagnosed to have cancer. This unit is under the Department of Internal Medicine. Being manned by one chairman of the unit, with all the best Hematologist and Oncologist doctors, with three efficient oncology nurses, who can cater the needs of patients coming from Region VII, Mindanao provinces and even outside of the country. It is equipped with advanced facilities that can compete with other institutions.

Hematology-Oncology Unit

The Renal Unit is isolated at the 3rd floor of the Expansion Building. It is a specialized area under the Department of Medicine that renders acute and chronic care of patients with renal failure.

The Renal Unit does not admit patients but only provides dialysis treatment for renal failure patients either admitted in the hospital or as an Outpatient Basis.

During emergency, one on – call nurse is available anytime of the day. They can be called at their contact numbers.

Facilities

The Renal Unit is equipped with computerized and advanced hemodialysis machines supplied by purified water according to the Set Standard. The unit provides safe and smooth dialysis for Hepatitis negative and positive patients. The unit is also equipped with a reprocessing machine which will rinse and disinfect the dialyzer and bloodlines used during dialysis.

The unit also serves patients on Peritoneal Dialysis for dressing, change of Transfer Set and other related procedures. It is also provided with emergency equipment such as cardiac monitor, E – carts for seriously – ill patients.

Our GE Hi-Speed CTi was installed in April of 1997 and is the first top of the line Helical Computerized Tomography Scan in the country. It has the longest Helical scan time of 90 seconds for facial reconstruction using 3D imaging, CT-angiography for aorta and cirle of Willis as well as dual phase study for the liver., Medrad power injector and smart prep for optimum scans during peak contrast blood levels. The constant injection rate also allows for reproducibility. Solid state detectors coupled with smart beam means low radiation dose without sacrificing image quality. Options include slide format films for case presentation.

vAdvantage Windows Work Station

Acquired at the same time with our Helical scan. This computer work station can do 3 dimensional studies: Multiplanar reconstruction, Multiplanar volume reconstruction, and Cine loop (reconstruction in real time images).

vGE Senographe 700T

Acquired in April 1997 along with our Helical scanner. Mammography can now be done easily and with ease in image reproducibility using the automatic exposure control. This takes guessing out of the picture while the computer decides the optimum radiation dose. New techniques and new film screen combination (KODAK) allows for low dose screen film mammography. 

Compression is both motorized and manual. Manual compression for fine movements of the compression paddle minimizes pain and discomfort during the procedure. A dedicated automatic film processor ensures optimum developing for excellent images as required by the American College of Radiology. We have also added an option to allow the needle wire localization for nonpalpable lesion to guide the surgeon.

Computed Tomography Scan (CT-Scan)

The Endoscopy Unit of Chong Hua Hospital is situated at the second floor of the main building just across the Operating Room Complex. This unit is staffed with the most competent medical practitioners and highly trained nursing staffs who attend to patients who need an examination or inspection of their body organs, joints or cavities.

The unit performs exams on either Outpatient or Inpatient basis depending on the degree of endoscopic procedure. Equipped with the latest endoscopic instrument (Olympus Endoscopy Machine), the patients are assured to get fast and accurate diagnostic or therapeutic result.

Headed by Dr. Imelda Acusar, they attend to patients from Monday to Saturday (7:00am – 3:00pm).

Types of Endoscopy Performed in the CHH – Endoscopy Unit:

Colonoscopy: examination of the inside of the colon and large intestine to detect polyps, tumors, ulceration, inflammation, colitis diverticula, Chrohn’s disease, and discovery and removal of foreign bodies.

Colposcopy: direct visualization of the vagina, and cervix to detect cancer, inflammation and other conditions.

Cystoscopy: examination of the bladder, urethra, urinary tract, uteral orifices, and prostate (men) with insertion of the endoscope through the urethra.

EGD (Esophogealgastroduodensoscopy):
visual examination of the upper gastro-intestinal (GI) tract. (also referred to as gastroscopy) to reveal hemorrhage, hiatal hernia, inflammation of the esophagus, gastric ulcers.

Endoscopic biopsy: the removal of tissue specimens for pathologic examination and analysis
This kind of exam depends on the recommendation from the Laboratory Department.

What is nuclear cardiology imaging?
Nuclear cardiology studies are procedures in which a small amount of radioactive material is used to assess myocardial blood flow, evaluate the pumping function of the heart and visualize the size and location of a heart attack.

Who will perform my test?
A licensed nuclear medicine technologist will perform the imaging portion of your test. If your test requires some sort of exercise portion of the test under the supervision of a cardiologist.
